Large scale Ukrainian immigration to Cape Breton began around 1904. Many of these new residents found work at the steel plant or in the coal mines. Some members in the community subsidized their income through such means as taking in boarders. Cape Bretoners of Ukrainian descent who live and work in the region have a rich cultural history celebrated through music, dance, food and religious practice. A variety of data contained in this archive, collected by Marcia Ostashewski, Patricia Nalepa and Justin Nalepa, was shared with the project team by many community members of the community. This is their living archive.
